Postcard perfect beaches, rocking beach bars and some seriously luxurious hotels, Rio is quite the show off but it is understated Sao Paulo that trumps in the culinary stakes.

Rio de Janeiro & Southern Brazil

Rio boasts sophistication and style in its luxurious hotels and bustling bars and pared back élan on its lazy stretches of iconic beaches. Visually stunning, Rio stretches from the endless azure waters of the Atlantic past the high rises of the cosmopolitan heart of the city and on to the low-rise labyrinth of brightly painted favelas that perch on the surrounding hills. Overlooking it all and visible from almost everywhere is the impressive statue of Christ the Redeemer, perched on the 700m peak of Corcovado mountain.

In contrast to Rio, the southern concrete jungle of Sao Paulo is neither surf- nor sun-kissed, but it still delivers in spades. Bursting with fascinating museums, galleries and probably the best restaurants and bars in the country, the energy of possibility and innovation is palpable, and the air is heady with a carefree lust for life.
