Iguazu Falls

It is impossible not to be impressed by the vast and thunderous Iguazu. Formed by two earthquakes over 150 million years ago, the Falls, spanning 2.7km, are made up of 275 individual cascades linked by steaming, churning cauldrons of water. Numbers aside, this place is simply mind blowing.

Situated on a basaltic line spanning the border between Argentina and Brazil, Iguazu is constantly smile-inducing and delivers that feeling of humility that all the great natural wonders of the world do so effortlessly. National park protection means there are only two hotels near the waterfalls: the Sheraton on the Argentinian side and the classic luxury of the Belmond Das Cataratas on the Brazilian side.

Staying in the national park means more time for walks in the subtropical rainforest that surround the falls where howler monkeys, tapirs, giant anteaters and even ocelots, jaguars and caiman roam wild. Importantly, it also means that while everyone else is rushing in and out on a day trip, you have the space to linger longer, to feel the power and to be alone with this most grand of nature’s spectacles.
